April 2010
Soroptimist International South West Pacific 17th Conference of Clubs
Coming up in May we are holding our first major fundraiser for the year with our annual Fashion Parade. Proceeds raised will be going to the Royal Flying Doctor Service and various projects. We are also selling Entertainment Books for 2010/11. Be sure to secure your tickets and books as soon as possible!
Internationally, there are four Federations of Soroptimist International (SI) - SI Americas, SI Europe
, SI Great Britain & Ireland and SI South West Pacific which we belong to. Our club is one of 17 clubs in the Region of Western Australia.
Four members from our club attended the biennial Conference of Clubs which was held on the Gold Coast in April. The theme of the Conference was Leadership and had guest speakers on the topic from Surf Life Saving Australia and
World Association of Girl Guides & Girl Scouts (WAGGGS).
We were honoured to have a delegation arrive from the All China Women's Federation . They gave us amazing facts and figures about the number of people they are helping in China. We also heard about several Soroptimist International Projects that have won Best Practice Awards.
Conference is always a wonderful meeting of like minded women from many countries who enjoy great friendship, goodwill and understanding.
Of course we also made sure there was a lot of fun with a Friendship evening and we danced the night away to the live band at the Gala evening.
Royal Flying Doctor Service
Soroptimist International of Helena have been supporting the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) for many years. Initially our support was through individual members purchasing their Christmas Cards.
Since 2007 funds raised at our annual Fashion Parade have allowed for the purchase of the following items:
- 2007 - Blood Esky
- 2007 - proceeds from other fundraising purchased a Blood Brick
- 2008 - Foetal Heart Monitor (doppler)
- 2009 - Foetal Heart Monitor
In 2008 and 2009 during the Zig Zag Festival parade, members shook tins and collected funds that were sent in to the RFDS.
