Busy Month!!

Well what a busy month August has been for our club.

At our social dinner we were joined by several Soroptimists from other clubs to listen to an educational and entertaining talk from Natalia Josephs of Image Power . She spoke about social intelligence and social etiquette and manners. We also watched a couple of television interviews where Natalia had been educating students and some unruly teenagers on how to interact in society.

Later in the month, club members volunteered their time to the Mundaring Shire to welcome people to the annual Mundaring Truffle Festival. We operated in shifts on the Sunday on the 2 entry gates handing out programmes and ensuring visitors were wearing their entry wrist bands. We were very fortunate to have a lovely sunny, warm day to soak in the festivities of the event.

Club member Robyn Cain has been visting the UK in her role as Federation Programme Convenor to attend various meetings.   She was also attending a joint party in Mongolia for the 10th and 5th birdays of the two Soroptimist International clubs there - Ulan Bataar and Darkan.  Before returning home she will be attending the DPI/NGO International Conference in Melbourne. We are very proud of her committment to Soroptimism.

We also organised a heap of promotional bags for our club this month and are currently selling them for $7 each or $20 for 3. Proceeds from sale of the bags will be going to our general fundraising account.

Getting the Vibe

Our club donated funds to help bring 10 - 12 senior students from LUURPNA Catholic College, Balgo Hills, east of Halls Creek to Kalgoorlie to attend Vibe Alive.

Vibe Alive was a two-day festival between August 25 and 26 for teens who like to dance, break, rap, sing, paint and play sport.

It is a chance for them to express themselves and show their school, family and community what they're good at. They also learn about career choices, meet some celebrities and find out a few important things about their health.

The Vibe Alive festival celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and gives young people a chance to shine by competing in traditional Indigenous Games, singing and dancing.

As well, there’s numeracy and literacy activities, careers and health expos, art workshops and goal-setting activities to determine the overall Vibe Alive Kalgoorlie, WA, winner.

Vibe Alive is funded by the Australian Government’s Community Festivals for Education Engagement program, designed to encourage school attendance, retention and healthy lifestyles for all young Australians, in particular, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

Geraldton Conference

Four members from our club attended the first Region Conference that was held in Geraldton from the 23 - 25 July.

The Soroptimist International National Representative Catherine Evans joined us and gave a presentation during the weekend.

The weekend began with an information evening on the Friday night where prospective Geraldton members could find out more about the world of Sorptimists.

The main day had presentations from our National Representative, past International President Margaret Lobo, Region UN/Programme Liaison Merle Thomson and Member Development Convenor Marilyn Fowler.  Our own club member Naomi Allan launched the new look Region website which her company designed.

On the Saturday night we had a lovely dinner and then spent the Sunday morning on a tour around Geraldton before heading home.

The friendship experienced over the weekend was fantastic and the Geraldton club provided great hospitality.
